Asymptote: An Approach to Decadent Fiction offers a radically new approach to the psychology of Decadent creation. Rejecting traditional arguments that Decadence is a celebration of deviance and exhaustion, this study presents the fin-de-siecle novel as a transformative process, a quest for health. By allowing the writer to project into fiction unwanted traits and destructive tendencies – by permitting the playful invention of provisional identities –, Decadent creation itself becomes a dynamic act of creative regeneration. In describing the interrelationship of Decadent authors and their fictions, Asymptote uses the mathematical figure of the asymptote to show how they converge, then split apart, and grow distant. The author’s approach to the facsimile selves he plays with and discards is the curve that never merges with his authorial identity. In successive chapters, this study describes the Decadents’ experimentation with perversion (Huysmans’s A rebours and Mendes’s Zo’har ), and their subsequent validation of social regulation and creative discipline. It examines magic and its appeal to fantasies of elitism and omnipotence (Péladan’s Le Vice supreme and Villiers’s Axël ), then shows authors embracing the values of community and service. It considers the Decadent text as a vehicle of change in which an artist ventilates fantasies of aggression and revenge (Mirbeau’s Le Journal d’une femme de chamber and Rachilde’s La Marquise de Sade ) then employs writing as the means by which these feelings are discharged. It examines creation as a form of play , “une aliénation grâce à laquelle l’esprit se récupère sous la forme des autres” (Schwob’s Vies imaginaries and Lorrain’s Histoires de masques ), yet notes the Decadents’ decision to return to a single generative center. Finally, it examines creation as an expression of artistic transience and failure, yet shows the Decadents’ success in commemorating the very forces of disintegration (Rodenbach’s L’Art en exil ). In considering the Decadents’ insistence on subjectivism and aloneness, this study concludes (Gourmont’s Sixtine ) by showing their wish to escape the prison of identity and to redefine their art as cooperative creation.

This study examines Calvin's belief that he was a prophet 'placed over nations and kingdoms to tear down and destroy, to build and to plant'. With this authority, Calvin pursued an expansionist agenda which blended religious, political, and social aspects towards the goal of a Protestant France.

The extraordinary story of African American composer Edmond Dédé, raised in antebellum New Orleans, and his remarkable career in France In 1855, Edmond Dédé, a free black composer from New Orleans, emigrated to Paris. There he trained with France's best classical musicians and went on to spend thirty-six years in Bordeaux leading the city's most popular orchestras. How did this African American, raised in the biggest slave market in the United States, come to compose ballets for one of the best theaters outside of Paris and gain recognition as one of Bordeaux's most popular orchestra leaders? Beginning with his birth in antebellum New Orleans in 1827 and ending with his death in Paris in 1901, Sally McKee vividly recounts the life of this extraordinary man. Première édition de la correspondance intégrale de Geneviève Straus avec ses cousins Halévy, en particulier avec Ludovic qui fut un interlocuteur constant de 1862 à 1908. La nature même des sources que constitue cette correspondance intime a permis d’établir, au rythme des échanges épistolaires, une biographie de Geneviève Halévy-Bizet-Straus, de révéler des événements ignorés de sa vie, de connaître les circonstances qui ont déterminé son destin et les chemins par lesquels l’épouse de Georges Bizet est devenue madame Straus, l’amie et l’égérie de Proust, et de bien d’autres. Des milieux du spectacle aux coulisses des théâtres, musiciens et aussi actrices de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle nous apparaissent sous les feux de la rampe comme dans leur intimité. De Nice annexée depuis peu, de Paris assiégé puis bouleversé par la Commune, Geneviève et Ludovic Halévy s’écrivent régulièrement. Dans leur correspondance, toute la société d’alors défile, au rythme de leurs engagements artistiques et professionnels, de leurs relations d’amitié, voire de haine au moment de l’Affaire Dreyfus. Parents, amis, relations composent un monde cosmopolite où se mêlent des personnages du Second Empire, aristocrates, académiciens et hommes politiques, artistes, écrivains, célébrités du moment et gloires confirmées par le temps. Cette correspondance propose une perception immédiate, riche, une vision « à chaud » des événements avant qu’ils ne deviennent l’Histoire avec en toile de fond, la société parisienne saisie sur le vif.
